  1. Summary of binding partners of α-neurexins and β-neurexins (Nrxn). Note that neuroligins preferentially bind to neurexins without insert in splice site 4 (−SS#4) and that binding is modified by the presence of + SS#4 as discussed in the main text. Of all currently known interaction partners only neurexophilins bind exclusively to α-neurexin [17]. Neurexophilins are expressed only in distinct neuronal populations in the brain [18, 19, 128, 131] but may modulate the function of their cognate α-neurexin receptors [18, 128].
