The significance between the genomic attributes studied (for example, genome size, network size, and so on) was calculated with one-sided Wilcoxon rank sum test. Values in parentheses are the mean values of the relevant attribute in the slow growing (S) and fast growing (F) groups. ‡Values not computed since low-ranked estimates of environmental complexity represent the obligatory symbionts, which were excluded from the analysis. §Random environments are described in Materials and methods.
