Retrotransposons collectively comprise 76% of the maize genome. In this preliminary analysis of the draft genome sequence by Josh Stein (MGSC, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, USA) it is clear that just the gypsy family huck element plus the copia relative ji make up nearly one-quarter of the genome - about 600 Mb.
