Statistical resources on the web

Content

With the recent flood of genomic data, many researchers have seen their work become more and more quantitative in nature, and have found that choice of the appropriate statistical analyses is not only essential but also potentially confounding. The StatPages.net site can aid researchers in selecting and implementing statistical tests for their data. This site contains links to over 550 pages of freely accessible statistical resources and features, and links to servers that perform a wide variety of statistical analyses. Users need only choose the type of analysis to be performed and paste in their data to the relevant server. In addition to the statistical analysis servers, Statpages.net lists numerous other statistical resource pages including online books, tutorials and downloadable software. Taken together, the sites listed here can be considered as a comprehensive, portable and free statistics software package.

Navigation

The format is very straightforward and consists essentially of an organized list of links accompanied in some cases by very brief descriptions. The site is broken down into 'Calculating Pages' and 'Other Statistical Resources'. The calculating pages make up the bulk of the site and are organized into 12 different categories according to the type of statistical analysis to be performed. The links take the user to servers where the various analyses can be performed. Links that use JavaScript or Java applets are indicated. In addition, two search engines are provided. One is specific for the StatPages.net site and the other allows a search of the entire web.

Reporter's comments

Timeliness

The site was last updated on 8 October 2000. Given that the site is the work of one individual, however, it is relatively well maintained. The links are to servers all over the world and their URLs do change from time to time, but these changes seem to be tracked well. There is also enough redundancy in the list to cover for outdated links.

Best feature

The collection and organization of such a wide variety of freely available statistical tools.

Wish list

There is a substantial amount of redundancy. Some of the servers are clearly superior to others performing the same analyses, but little attempt is made to distinguish between options. It would be nice to have some indication or ranking of which links are preferred.
